By popular request we have re-vamped our ranges to group our herringbone and chevron patterns together, but please note that our Par-ky and The Italian Collection herringbone and chevron blocks are only found in within their own range. The individual block-pattern timber flooring known as parquet dates back to 17th Century France. These timber blocks laid in geometrical patterns make a stunning floor and their perfectly proportioned dimensions – the length is an exact multiple of the width – means that they can be laid in both basket weave and tumbling dice patterns, as well as the classic herringbone. Laying parquet blocks is usually highly labour intensive, requiring that they be individually pinned down before being sanded and finished on site, but these blocks are not only dimensionally stable, thanks to a cross-glued, multi-layer backing, they are also suitable for a much easier, glue-down installation. Havwoods herringbone blocks are available both prefinished and unfinished for staining to your exact requirements on site, but we do advise an additional coat of finish on oiled floors after installation.

USEFUL INFORMATION

Many of Havwoods products are suitable for use on floors, walls and ceilings. Ask for details.

Timber floors have come a very long way in the last couple of decades: modern processes dramatically reduce the need for exotic timbers, and lacquers and impregnation processes (like Xtreme) ensure such superior durability that these timbers may be specified even in high footfall locations. Of course, near indestructibility is the ultimate goal for timber flooring manufacturers, but the limitations are due, not to technology, but to the cellular nature of wood itself. Some years ago, the Americans caused great excitement by introducing timber floors coated with an aluminium oxide lacquer. Unfortunately, whilst it delivered simply amazing abrasion resistance in the laboratory, it proved too hard and inflexible for the timber underneath, which naturally compresses on impact. The result was a surface with a tendency to shatter or go white when scratched. Finally, however, there is a solution: a reproduction engineered plank we call Fusion. The process itself is highly advanced but, put simply, it involves re-creating our favourite floors on perfectly prepared High Density Fibre planks. These engineered timber planks are considerably harder than hardwood, are totally consistent in their hardness and, unlike wood in it’s natural state, are not cellular in structure. This means that they will not compress on impact and so can be successfully finished with the very latest aluminium oxide technology – no fewer than seven coats of it, in fact. The result is a beautiful, warm, matt lacquered 14mm PEFCTM certified bevelled plank, which is installed as a floating floor, exhibits excellent acoustic and slip resistant properties, and yet is virtually impossible to accidentally scratch, mark or dent: a plank which really will look as stunning in years to come as it does on the day it is laid. At Havwoods, we have been intimately involved in timber technological innovations for more than 40 years; in our opinion, these planks are the ultimate in engineered wood. Customers who have seen Fusion are equally as impressed, and several are undertaking their own project-specific trials. For example, Yamaha tested it under unprotected piano castors for 24-hours with no subsequent dents or marks in the finish and, as a result, are installing it in their London Margaret Street showroom. Fusion products carry a lifetime residential/15-year commercial warranty.

Havwoods’ Henley is the ultimate designer’s tool: a pre-finished engineered collection from two of Europe’s finest mills which combine wonderful fashion-forward aesthetics with practicality, durability and structural integrity. The three 19mm planks utilize a triple-layered construction with a European oak lamella in excess of 4.5mm. This is bonded to a layer of solid birch or alder with a birch or alder ply base. The 20mm products feature a 6mm European oak lamella bonded to a birch ply backing. They are finished with a UV cured oil or Hardwax Oil which brings out the colour and grain and allows the spot treatment of damaged areas, yet provides a surface which is as tough, stain- and water-resistant as most lacquers. Most importantly, each once has been tested by ourselves specifically to ensure that the techniques used to produce these spectacular finishes do not weaken the timber itself and that they are suitable for use even in demanding hospitality environments. Henley products are suitable for use over underfloor heating (conditions apply). As with all oiled boards we recommend a further coat of finish after installation.

PAR-KY

Par-ky is a wood veneer plank. This means that a thin layer of real wood is bonded to an HDF (High Density Fibre) core.

HDF is compressed wood. It is considerably harder than hardwood, is totally consistent in its degree of hardness, and, unlike wood in its natural state, is not cellular in nature. This means that it will not compress on impact and is thus less likely to indent. It also means that it can be finished with an extremely hard lacquer without fear of it shattering.

Havwoods’ Par-ky planks are available in two thickness, one of which incorporates a layer of cork for extra acoustic and thermal insulation. They offer excellent value, making a real wood floor an option on even the tightest of budgets. Furthermore, all Havwoods’ Par-ky planks utilise prime grade wood, meaning that the surface is virtually free of knots and other natural characteristics and show very little colour variation. This makes them particularly suitable for those who prefer a very clean-looking floor.

Relik embraces all Havwoods’ ever more popular collection of reclaimed timbers under one brand. Sourced from two different mills, one British owned and one Dutch, it includes reproduction as well as genuine reclaimed products, and a herringbone block as well as planks. The unique appearance of reclaimed timber drives demand, yet this very lack of uniformity traditionally leads to difficult installation and high levels of wastage. Problems with reliable supplies can also make it a high risk specification. To solve this dilemma all of our Havwoods’ Relik range are actually pre-finished engineered products. This makes better use of the finite resources of timber reclaimed from barns, quays, docks, etc, and results in easy to fit boards which are so stable they may even be used over underfloor heating. The reproduction reclaimed products are so good that we’ve now doubled the range. Sawing, scraping, brushing, oiling makes them works of art for the floor and a weathering process which not only makes them look genuinely lived-in, it also makes them extra tough since it strips out the soft tissues between the grain. As with all oiled products we recommend an additional coat after installation.

TRIKBRIK

Our publications are available as printed publications, on-line digital interactive applications, or pdfs. Click here to request yours.

With over 1000 timber products in the Havwoods portfolio our passion for wood is indisputable, but occasionally we find a non-wood product which impresses us enough to include it. TrikBrik is one such product. You can recreate the Servian Wall overnight, emulate the Arc de Triomf in under a week, or simply turn pillars of plaster into pillars of stone in a day; if you’ve a mind to do something special, this is the product which will enable you to bring it to life. Contemporary design is all about textures, so brick and stone now feature strongly in interiors. The downside is that they are heavy, messy to fit and require a skilled labour force; brick slips make use of any existing structure, but are equally as messy and are still best left to a bricklayer. TrikBrik is completely different: designed as a metre square interlocking cladding panel system, it comes complete with mastic and paints (sometimes several to achieve the effect) to hide the joins, and it enables you to achieve authentic-looking brick and stone walls and other features, quickly and cleanly using unskilled labour. The patented manufacturing system is the result of no less than 30-years research. High density polyurethane, polyester resin and crushed marble stone produce an exceptionally light yet durable, highly realistic panel, with excellent thermal, acoustic and flame retardant properties. TrikBrik is water repellant and non-permeable, so will not be affected by humidity; nor will it fade in the sun. The panels are easily cut to size, requiring no special tools, and can be treated with anti-graffiti formula if required. Furthermore, they can be repainted with a polyester resin paint; so when your Arc de Triomf starts to pall in red, you can always paint it purple.

For many centuries Italy has been synonymous with style, whether it be in architecture, clothing or product design. Featuring a 4mm wear layer of the finest oak, slow grown in cold northern forests for a dense, even grain, this collection of glue-down engineered tongue and groove planks, herringbone and chevron blocks is milled in Europe to the specifications of Havwoods Italia, in probably the most sophisticated and highly automated facility we have encountered, ensuring a quite remarkable consistency. Only select grade timbers are chosen, and these are bonded to layers of quality spruce or birch ply to form a strong and stable board which is FSC® certified, and comes with a 20-year warranty.

Italian Collection boards feature techniques which include brushing to open the grain and emphasise its natural characteristics, as well as fuming and thermo treatments which darken it, and all are completed in-house. They come in three sizes, specifically selected for producing the complex designs which are becoming such a strong feature of fashion-forward interiors, and in a range of carefully chosen, luxurious finishes which we hope to expand over time.

Produced in Europe these hardwood engineered boards are amongst the very best in the world. On the 20mm planks a 6mm lamella of European oak is bonded under no less than 150 tonnes of pressure to a backing of birch ply. For superior strength this is made of an odd number of layers of thin strips of birch, laid in alternating directions and glued with a WBP glue, which means that it won’t delaminate even in the unlikely event that it was boiled in water for several hours! The moisture content of both layers is well controlled and finely balanced, machining standards are exceptional and they carry a lifetime structural warranty with a 25-year residential wear resistance warranty. Please note that two of these products have now moved into our Henley collection (Tiempo and Barro). New to this vastly increased range are 19mm products from a second superior European mill which carry a 10-year commercial/15 year residential warranty. These pre-finished boards utilise a triple-layered construction comprising of a minimum 4.5mm oak lamella bonded to a layer of solid birch or alder and with a birch or alder ply base. Consistent quality is maintained by keeping all processes in house and the finishes are of particular interest, especially those of the thermally treated (fired) boards. This ecologically sound treatment process uses no chemical additivesto produce a dark timber with the colour running throughout the lamella, offering a genuinely viable alternative totropical hardwoods. Furthermore, the process reduces the moisture content, increasing decay- and water-resistance, and can increase stability by more than 50%. All Venture Plank products are suitable for use over underfloor heating.

Many of Havwoods’ products may be used on walls or furniture, but our Vertical collection does just what it says on the tin – it is designed specifically for use as cladding. All the products shown here feature a 5mm lamella of wood which has been reclaimed from old barns and buildings in North America. This is bonded to a top quality birch ply base layer, resulting in a plank which exhibits all the warmth and individuality of genuinely old timber, yet is stable, easy to install, and makes better use of finite resources.

Contemporary pre-finished engineered timber is tough, and distressed finishes of products like Relik are adept at disguising minor levels of wear, but if your scheme calls for a traditional-looking timber plank, the options are more limited. High footfall retailers frequently face this dilemma, since the high CRI lighting required to render colours faithfully also highlights every mark. Marks and Spencer is a prime example: wanting to use wood in their clothing and changing room areas to denote quality and warmth, whilst being supremely aware of the practicalities. The solution was Xtreme: up to 60% harder than oak, it’s the perfect plank for exceptional levels of traffic. Whilst emulating a traditional solid wood plank in both dimensions and finish, Xtreme provides the stability, speed and ease of installation of a pre-finished engineered plank. But air and sap is removed from the oak lamella, leaving an open cell structure which is filled with liquid acrylic. Once dry, the result is a wear layer which is both as hard as rock and consistently coloured throughout. But toughness is just one criteria for flooring in public places; slip ratings are perhaps even more critical. Again Xtreme is exceptional, particularly for a lacquered product, achieving ‘low’ in both wet and dry conditions. And at just 12.7mm thick it is also more suited to abutting stone and ceramic tiles than a thicker plank. Xtreme planks carry a 5-year commercial warranty.
