Choosing products with official, independent and trusted ecolabel certification ensures materials are from responsibly sourced and sustainable sources. It is the mission of these ecolables to promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world’s forests, directly or indirectly addressing issues such as illegal logging, deforestation and global warming. By choosing these products, you are supporting the creation of positive effects on economic development, environmental conservation, poverty alleviation and social and political empowerment.
In addition to choosing certified sustainable timber products, timber products are among the most sustainable choices you can make with regards to building materials. Timber stores carbon through its life cycle and timber flooring has the lowest CO2 cost of any commercially available flooring material.
The manufacturing process of producing timber uses less energy than most other building materials, including metal, concrete and even dimensional lumber, resulting in fewer emissions into the atmosphere. Compared to metals, tiling and concrete, the methods used to harvest, produce, transport and install timber planks (engineered or solid) are less detrimental to the environment. What's more, engineered timber flooring is even more sustainable than solid as it makes better use of slow growth hardwood species. The top layer of an engineered board is thinner than that required for solid timber boards, which allows many more planks to be produced from one tree, making better use of a finite resource.
